Of Letters and Lace: Milton Caniff's Comics and the Cultural Conflicts of World War II Online
Our presenter Dr. Yezbick is currently Professor of English and Communications at STLCC- Wildwood. Now largely forgotten, Milton Caniff's Terry and the Pirates became the most important American comic strip of World War II, generating thousands of letters from Armed Forces readers worldwide, as well as Home Front households that clipped and saved daily installments out of remembrance for their deployed loved ones. Meanwhile, Caniff's Armed Forces only creation, Male Call, provided a unique new kind of comic strip commentary on the everyday absurdities of daily military life. Join us for a rare glimpse into the fan cultures that helped to win the war as we survey dozens of letters from the OSU's Billy Ireland archive that reveal how Caniff's characters and their contexts allowed readers of all ages, genders, and interests to fight, hope, heal, and mourn together.
